Air spray bath compressor safety valve - has plate held clear of opening by hygroscopic stem

The safety valve is for compressors or turbines used in air spray baths. Above the intake opening in the housing of turbine or compressor there is a valve plate (1), which is normally held clear of the opening by a supporting stem (3), so that air can flow through. The stem is made of highly hygroscopic material, which collapses rapidly on contact with water, whereupon a spring (2a) thrusts the plate down against the opening and prevents water being drawn into the housing.
