A glass-fiber drawing unit includes a non-tip orifice plate(14) with a flat undersurface through which the orifice extends and against which bulk gas is directed by a supply nozzle(32) to cool fiber being drawn from the orifice. The orifices are arranged in paired sets spaced from one another by a distance greater than the spacing within the sets. The spacing is such that if a fiber drawn from one orifice of a set breaks, glass from the orifice will join the flowing from the other orifices of other sets.
