The cable pulling winch is typically power driven and has a drum onto which the wire, used for pulling the cable being laid, is coiled. In order to give an even layering of the wire on the drum a reciprocating guide arm is provided to hold the guide pulley. The bearing axis of the hinge for the guide arm is perpendicular to the axis of the winch drum. The wire is coaxial with the bearing axis where it passed round the guide pulley at the bottom of the arm. The arm movement is controlled by a traverse drive which operates on the free end of the arm and moves it to and fro between defined limits at a set rate.
