Proctologic device (10) for heat treatment of hemorrhoids (43, 44). One problem in such devices is the fear that the temperature sensor will fail and permit the device to heat up beyond safe temperature levels or fail to heat up at all because of a short circuit or other failure. Another problem is the provision of accurate temperature monitoring. These problems are solved by providing an elongated appliance (46) containing a resistance heating element (68) and a temperature transducer (80). The temperature transducer (80) is mounted in direct engagement with the front end of the metal envelope (60) and is isolated from the heating control element (68) by the insulative core (70). A control circuit (92) is connected to the temperature sensor for controlling the heating element (68) to maintain the temperature of the appliance above body temperature. Safety network (166) is provided for discontinuing the application of heat to the appliance should the sensed temperature fall below a preset low temperature or go above a preset elevated temperature. |
