The braking system detects the speed and the direction of one of the vehicle wheels and produces a corresponding electrical signal. Logic evaluates this signal and other input signals to control a solenoid valve that operates the auxiliary brake or the main brake. Speed and direction are measured by a device comprising a toothed pole wheel, two detectors, a pulse shaper with direction discriminator and a frequency/voltage converter with threshold. The detectors may be active pulse generators with magnetic-field sensitive devices or opto electric devices. The pulse shaper contains a frequency multiplier. The logic circuit also receives a signal from the gears for when the vehicle is in reverse.
