The device damps out motor vehicle brake squeal, partic. on buses. The brake shoe (2) with lining (1) has on the other side a layer (3) of viscos-elastic material with high inherent damping effect, against which abuts a frequency tuned reaction mass (4). The layer can have a heat-insulating friction coating (7) on one or both sides, and there can be a radial bore in it and the shoe and the mass, accommodating a bolt (5) with a spring (6) compressing them together. Alternately the components may be adhesively bonded.
