Water is sprayed into molten slag to make slag sand, which is fed with the water into a tank contg. a sieve bucket wheel removing the granulate to a conveyor belt. The tank has an overflow, via which the hot water, contg. fine particles of granulate, flows into a reservoir with a pump feeding the water into the top of a cooling tower. From the cooling tower, the water flows into a cold water tank used for the direct supply of nozzles spraying the water into the molten slag. In the pref. plant, the cold water tank has an inlet for fresh water, and a bell which prevents the fine particles of granulate in the water from blocking the water circulation system.
