The engine starting circuit for a diesel engine enables the engine to be restarted within a given time after stopping, without requiring preheating, thus reducing the load on the battery, and increasing the life of the heater plug. A timing device (6) is included in series with a capacitor (17) and resistance (18), to increase the time during which the plug remains heated. This timing device also incorporates a resistance (7) in parallel with a capacitor (8), and is also in series with a temp. sensitive element (20) and a threshold switch. An indicator lamp (15) indicates to the driver whether the engine is ready to be restarted.
