<p>PURPOSE:To multiply cells efficiently, by making cells adhere to one side of the wall of a semipermeable hollow fiber membrane comprising a water-containing polymethyl-methacrylate composite of specific characters, having improved cell adhering properties and substance penetraing properties, and by letting a cultivation liquid or oxygen-containing gas flow along the other side of the wall. CONSTITUTION:A transparent water-containing gel polymethylmethacrylate composition comprising an isotactic and a syndiotactic parts in a weight ratio of the former to the latter of about 1:10-10:1 as a raw material is formed into the semipermeable hollow fiber membrane 1 having an inner diameter of about 10-500 microns, a wall thickness of about 5-500 microns, and a water content of about 10-80wt%, preferably about 25-65wt%. The membrane is bonded and fixed in the plastic cylindrical housing 2. Cells, e.g., animal or microbial cells, as a suspension is then injected from the opening to the housing 2, made to adhere to the outer side wall of the hollow fiber memebrane 1, and the cultivation liquid is allowed to flow in the hollow fiber membrane 1. The cultivation of a given period multiplies the cells efficiently.</p> |
