Mounting block for engine - is of elastic and uses coil spring embedded in viscous elastic pad cased elastic membrane

The mounting is used to support and isolate an automobile engine from a sub-frame, being of a construction which combines the properties of both elastic and visco-elastic materials. The elastic component (1) can be of metal or elastomer and meets the load bearing function, i.e. is stiff enough to maintain the engine in a repose position, and is fixed (2) to both the engine block and the chassis. The visco-elastic component (3) acts in parallel with the elastic component, having a damping co-efficient of between 0.4 and 3, having an E of between 100 and 500,000 KN per sq.m, having a shore hardness of less than 15, and being cased in an elastic membrane (4). The cased (4) visco-elastic unit (3) may be sited inside the curved leaf springs (1), or a coil spring may be embedded in a cased visco-elastic unit.
