Electromagnetic stirrer for continuous casting plant - where DC is fed through some slab guide rolls and also through helical coil surrounding slab to create stirring motion

Parent patent described the electrodynamic stirring of the molten core in a continuously cast slab while the latter travelled between two rows of guide and support rolls. An electric current was fed through some rolls and a coil to create a magnetic stirring field. Improvement is that the magnet coil is formed by locating straight conductor bars in the spaces between the rolls, and the ends of the bars are joined together to form a single helical coil with a rectangular cross-section. The bars pref. possess a hollow, triangular cross-section through which a coolant flows and the coil is pref. fed with d.c. The bars forming the coil are very close to the slab so efficient stirring is obtd. without interfering with simple roll changing.
