An animated doll has a head (1), flexibly mounted on a polyurethane body (2). The latter has a cavity (8) located immediately below a crank rod (7) passing vertically through the doll's neck and coupled eccentrically with a connecting rod which is coupled at its end to flexible lips of the doll. The connecting rod (8) carries two flexible contacts (10, 11) which may be opened by insertion of a dummy into the doll's mouth to cause one flexible contact to engage a further fixed contact (12). The contacts are electrically connected to terminal studs (14, 15, 16) in the cavity (5). A number of interchangeable motorised units are provided for insertion in the cavity, contacts on these engaging selected ones of the cavity studs so that insertion or removal of the dummy activates or deactivates the inserted unit. The unit may be an audible unit generating crying sounds or mechanically couplable to the crank rod to provide varying head or lip movements.
