PURPOSE:To readily inspect the surface characteristic of the image holding member by adding various processes such as of charging the image holding member surface, forming the charges of the distributions corresponding to the charge distributions of the electrostatic image holding member surface having been charged on a plastic film and heating the film. CONSTITUTION:When the image holding member having protrusions on its surface is charged, variations occur in the charge distribution because of reasons such as occurrence of insulation breakdown in the protrusions and the decrease in the electrostatic capacity in the protrusions hence difficulty in charge pickup. Next, if the charges of the distributions corresponding to the charge distributions on the image holding member surface are formed on a thermoplastic film and this is heated, then thermal deformation is produced in the portions where the charges exist, whereby the relief patterns are formed. Since the portions where no thermal deformations are caused correspond to the protrusions existing on the image holding member surface, the defect parts being the protrusions of the image holding member may be readily detected by these relief patterns. |
