A compact p.a.b.x is built as a single unit which plugs in to a mounting plate fixed to the wall. The power supply, exchange line and internal lines are terminated on the carrier plate and connected to a multi-way socket. The mating plug pins are arranged to break the power and exchange lines first when withdrawing the unit. Two guide posts of different diameters on the mounting plate mechanically support the unit. Catches in the unit engage grooves in the posts when plugged in and require a special tool to release them. All switches and adjustments are on the back of the unit and all terminals and fixings are covered when installed. The installation can be tested by a special test unit plugged in instead of the exchange.
