H2 prodn. by steam reforming of hydrocarbons includes adsorptive sepn. of components other than H2 from the reformed gas mixt. and regeneration of the adsorber to give a purging gas contg. the sepd. components. This gas is freed from CO2 and then (partly) burnt for heating the reformer and/or recycled to an earlier process stage, pref. (partly) to the reformed gas before adsorption or the hydrocarbons to be reformed. The economy of the process is improved.
