A flowmeter has a sealed housing (11) with a tangential inlet and an axial outlet (17) for the fluid stream and defining an open flow-through compartment (15) containing a follower element (21) driven by the fluid stream along a circular guide track at a speed proportional to the volume flow rate of the fluid stream. The follower element is a cylindrical roller or other body of revolution whose axis (27) is parallel to the axis (22) of the guide track. The opposed end portions (21A, 21B) of the follower element have concentric cylindrical surfaces in rolling engagement with internal concentric cylindrical surfaces (19A, 20A) on the housing forming the outer flanks of the guide track.
