SPENT FUEL CONSOLIDATION SYSTEM

The plant includes a turntable on which three stations (a,b,c) are fixed. Station (a)(24) forms a support for an assembly of spent nuclear fuel rods, where cutters are used to remove the top part of the assembly. In the centre of the turntable is a vertical pillar carrying a holder (32). The crane lifts the bundle of rods so the turntable can be rotated to move station (b) (26) under the rods. The rods are then driven downwards through a die so they are squeezed together and consolidated. The crane is next used to transfer the consolidated bundle to a cortainer in station (c)(28). The entire plant is operated by remote control while immersed in a fluid, e.g. water.
