METHOD AND DEVICE FOR COMPOSTING GARBAGE OR LIKE BY THERMAL DECOMPOSITION

Refuse and refuse-sludge mixts. are processed into compost in open-air dumps (in European latitudes) using air filter beds on pallets. A first gravel layer is followed by a sand layer and a fine layer of peat. The first layer of refuse or refuse-sludge mixt. is laid on this bed to a height of 1.2-1.5m. Wire mesh pipes are arranged in a regular pattern to create vertical air shafts. After three weeks the first layer has become matted and stable enough to receive a second layer of 1.2-1.5 m thickness. The pipes are drawn out enough to leave behind uncased air shafts. This can be repeated several times and is a reliable way of low-cost composting and is not affected by the European weather conditions.
