Process for purifying an aq.ZnSO4 soln. used for the electrolytic prodn. of Zn, the novelty being (a) accurate control of the wt. of Zn dust supplied by an automatic feeder to the first and subsequent purification stages; (b) continuous measurement of the pH of samples of the solns. starting from the final purification stage; (c) using the pH to control the addn. of alpha-nitroso-beta-naphthol (N-N) used to remove the Co ion; (d) taking a sample of the ZnSO4 soln. leaving the final purification stage and measuring the H2 gas obtd. by electrolysis in order to measure the purity of the soln. The pref. plant includes an automatic weighing machine for the Zn dust and automatic washing of the electrodes in the pH appts. plus other appts. described in extensive claims.
