Flat glass of thickness in the range of 5.5mm to 8mm is manufd. under high load conditions at rate of 3.250 to 4,500 tones per week and is discharged from the molten metal bath at speed in the range of 380 to 600 m/hr, without undue loss of width, by laterally confining the edges of the molten glass layer as it is poured onto the bath to impose initial acceleration on the glass. The glass in ribbon form which is later permitted unconfined lateral movement is already advancing at high speed and is attenuated to its desired thickness by further acceleation to the high discharge speed.
