<p>Joints between two thermoplastic components (1, 5) are made by fitting a plug (6) with an annular flange (7) into a recess (3) which will accept the plug up to the level of the flange. The two components are brought to temp. simultaneously by compression contact with a hot metal tool (9) shaped to fit the walls of the recess (8) and accept the surface of the plug (10). The interface (4) between the plug and the recess is slightly conic. The pieces are dimensioned for an interference fit of 1-5 mm, pref. 1-2 mm to form fused burrs around each end of the joint. Esp. for sealing or securing plugs or stoppers of relatively inelastic materials sufficiently to resist disturbance by local impacts.</p> |
