A motor-generator set comprises a generator 61 having a rotatable armature winding 65 fed with single-phase A.C. through a commutator engaged by a pair of rotating brushes 66, 67 so as to induce a polyphase pulsating current in a stator winding 63, this current being fed to polyphase windings on the stator of a motor 62 whose rotor is wound for singlephase with a condenser in circuit. As shown in Fig. 8 the generator is supplied with singlephase current from an alternator 60. The armature 65 is rotated slowly by a motor 69 and clutch 70 to reduce commutator ripple, while the brushes are rotated by a motor 68. The motor 62 has a three-phase four-pole stator winding 64, and the rotor is of singlephase four-pole type. Each rotor pole is provided with several concentric single-phase circuits, as shown in Fig. 6, in which the end segments 50, 51 are joined by telescoped conductors 52, 53, separated by an insulating film to provide the necessary capacity according to the invention. If desired, the conductors may consist of a series of gapped laminµ separated by dielectric material as shown in Fig. 7. In this form the rotor may be made self-supporting by forming the conductors with additional apertures 22 at the edges as shown in Fig. 2 and, if desired, a circulating conductor 23 being also provided.
