The IC engine carburettor has a detector for the fuel level in a standpipe emitting electrical signals conrolling a preceding inlet valve so as to keep initial fuel pressure constant. The detector is formed by a photoelectric cell. The light source (4) of the cell has a nearly parallel outlet, and one or more light deflectors (9) are mounted before the source and/or the light receiver (5). The deflector has a light-permeable surface brought into contact with the medium in the standpipe (1), the beams passing through it in a direction other than horizontal. The beams only strike the receiver cell after passing through fuel (3) or air.
