The mechanism is intended for moving a highly viscous medium using a transport worm (3), and is provided with a bladed impeller (5) upstream of the worm. The latter and the impeller are preferably arranged on a common drive shaft (4). The mechanism may comprise more than one impeller. The distance between the worm and impeller may be adjustable. The width of an annular chamber between the impeller and the impeller housing (1) may be adjustable. The housing may have a converging funnel shape in the region of the impeller.
