<p>A sewing machine looper has a needle-protector combined with the looper tip, attached to a flexible arm which can bend around an axis parallel to the axis of the looper. If the needle is deflected into the path of the looper, it first contacts the protector, causing the flexible arm to bend, taking the looper-tip with it out of its collision-course with the needle. In contrast to previously-known protectors, which deflect the needle out of the way, the proposed method deflects the tip of the looper, thus preventing needle stresses which may cause premature needle breakage. The device is self-acting, and does not depend upon the skill of the operative in setting-up.</p> |
