The light-metal combustion engine cylinder (1) has a cylinder wall which, at the end facing the cylinder head, contains a reinforcing annular, or segmental, insert (3) radially outward of the cylinder wall surface. The insert is in a material with high resistance against mechanical and thermal stress and of a type used for piston ring carriers in a light-metal piston. It has a radial thickness of 20 to 40% of the cylinder wall thickness. Its height may be 1 to 1.5 times the cylinder wall thickness. It may be provided with radial cut-outs.
