PURPOSE:To obtain the orientational property of a uniform monodomain state, a high contrast ratio at the time of driving and good bistability by using a specific perylene as a component to form oriented layers. CONSTITUTION:This element has electrodes 13, 23 and the oriented layers 15, 25 for orienting a liquid crystal layer 33 respectively on the inner side of a pair of substrates 11, 21 facing each other. The perylene expressed by formula I is used as the component to form the oriented layers 15, 25. In formula I, R denotes hydrogen, lower alkyl group or substd. or unsubstd. arom. hydrocarbon ring. The liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal element formed in such a manner can be uniaxially oriented by a uniaxial orientation treatment such as rubbing treatment or diagonal vapor deposition treatment. The liquid crystal element with which the orientation of the uniform monodomain state with decreased defects is obtainable and which exhibits the stable bistability and the high contrast ratio at the time of driving is thereby obtd. |
