The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0813532/IV (b)/1> where R is an alkyl radical of not more than 4 carbon atoms which bears at least one substituent, provided that R is not a carboxymethyl radical, and X is a halide anion. Suitable substituents on R are halogen, hydroxyl, carboxyl, alkoxy, carboalkoxy, carbamyl, N-substituted carbamyl, and di- or tri-substituted amino groups. The compounds may be prepared by quaternizing either 4, 41-dipyridyl or a 4,41-dipyridyl monoquaternary salt of the formula: <FORM:0813532/IV (b)/2> e.g. in an inert diluent or solvent such as acetone, a lower aliphatic alcohol, or nitrobenzene; heat may be applied. Compounds in which R is substituted by halogen may be prepared by halogenating the corresponding hydroxy compounds, e.g. with thionyl chloride. Examples describe the preparation of 4,41-dipyridyl di-b -hydroxyethobromide, di-b -chloroethobromide, di - b - ethoxyethoiodide, di - carbethoxymethochloride, di - (b - carboxyethochloride), di - (g - carbethoxypropobromide), di - (N,N,-diethylcarbamylmethochloride), di - (g - cyclo-tetramethyleneaminopropioiodide) dihydriodide, and N,N1 - bis - (g - trimethylammoniumpropyl) 4,41 - dipyridylium tetrabromide- The compounds are used in herbicidal compositions (see Group VI).ALSO:Herbicidal compositions contain one or more compounds of the formula <FORM:0813532/VI/1> where R is an alkyl radical of not more than 4 carbon atoms which bears at least one substituent, provided that R is not a carboxymethyl radical, and X is a halide anion. The compositions may be in the form of aqueous solutions, which may also contain wetting agents, e.g. the condensation product of ethylene oxide with an alkyl phenol; humectants, e.g. CaCl2, glycerol, ethylene glycol and polyethylene glycols; and agents for improving adhesion to plants, e.g. sodium carboxymethylcellulose or ammonium polymethacrylate. The compositions may be applied as dusts, e.g. with talc, china clay, gypsum or basic slag. The compositions may also contain known herbicidal agents, such as 2 : 4-D, 2 : 4 : 5-T, M.C.P.A., the corresponding g -phenoxybutyric acids, and salts thereof. In examples the compositions contain as active ingredient (10) 4,41-dipyridyl di - b - hydroxyethyobromide, (11) 4,41 - dipyridyl di - carbethoxymethochloride, (12) 4,41 - dipyridyl di - b - ethoxyethoiodide, and (13) 4,41 - dipyridyl di - b - chloroethobromide, all in aqueous solution containing the condensation product of ethylene oxide with octylcresol.
