PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid absorbing mat with good rigidity and liquid absorption properties, by using a single sheet of or a plurality of piled sheets of fiber cloths made of synthetic fibers with their filaments aligned and entangling the fibers together with barbed neeldes. CONSTITUTION:Electrolyte resistant synthetic fibers, for instance, raw material fibers consisting of polyester fibers of three deniers and those of six deniers in a weight ratio of 70:30, are combed to align their filaments and to obtain a fabric. A single sheet of said fabric, if said fabric has an enough thickness, or a plurality of fabric sheets piled up, if said sheets have a thin thickness, are used as a piled cloth (b). A needle punching work is performed, for instance, at a rate of 190 times/cm<2> or more by barbed needles (a) obtaining a liquid absorbing mat with its fibers entangled on one another. In this way, the liquid absorption property can be improved by fine spaces formed between fibers and, simultaneously, the entanglement of fibers can be strengthened to eliminate stray of fibers, thus capable of obtaining a liquid absorbing mat having appropriate rigidity coupled with easiness in battery assembly. |
