In a loading apparatus for a processing machine, in particular a machine tool (1), a manipulator (13) is traversable on a supporting arrangement (10, 11, 12). The manipulator has two motion units (23) which are provided with gripping devices (31) on the workpiece side. The manipulator (13) is provided with a self-contained drive preferably consisting of a rack-and-pinion drive (16, 17). This self-contained drive, together with the paired arrangement of the motion units, permits short cycle times. <IMAGE>
