A guide roller having a roller casing (1) for guiding a paper web in a rotary printing machine is arranged rotatably on a shaft (41) via two rings (2) and bearings (3). The bearings (3) and the rings (2) are arranged axially offset by more than one bearing width (b) from the end face (11) of the roller casing (1) in the direction of the middle of the roller casing (1). As a result, the subcritical speed range is increased considerably as a result of both the reduction in the bearing spacing and a lower weight of the guide roller, itself made possible by shortening the bearing spacing. Furthermore, greater resistance is thereby opposed to the sag, that is to say a considerably more favourable bending line is obtained. <IMAGE>
