Process and plant for treating waste water fed via a pump (1) and via a mixing apparatus (2) - admixed with flocculants - into a gravity filter (3), forming a combination filter composed of a support fabric and a primary filter layer. The water passing through this filter becomes enriched with oxygen to close to the saturation point and is then immediately passed over a large-area element (4) which is combined with the gravity filter and in which the filtrate is biologically treated. The biologically treated water is collected in a trough (5) and passed into an outfall either via a settling pool and a further filter part or directly. The constituents separated off in the filter (3) are withdrawn via a valve (6) as still fluent sludge.
