Compounds of Formula I, including the compound in which each of R, R1 and R2 is -OH (N-phosphonomethyl glycine), which compounds may be used as the active ingredients in conventional pesticidal compositions, may be prepared by phosphonomethylation of a glycine, by phosphite addition to azomethines or by oxidation of the corresponding phosphinic compounds. The amides and esters may also be prepared by reacting the corresponding acid halide or the methyl ester with the corresponding amine or alcohol. The salts may be prepared by partial or complete neutralization with the appropriate base.
