This invention relates to a process for preparing tetrahydrfuran or dihydrofuran by reacting an acetic acid ester of 1,4-butanediol or 1,4-dihydroxybutene-2 and water in the presence of an acid catalyst with a high yield. The process is characterized in that the reaction is carried out in two separate reaction zone in combination with a plurality of distilling columns and a part of reaction product is recycled to a predetermined position of the reaction zone.
