The title compds, were prepd. by the hydration of alkylene oxide at 50-200≦̸C in the presence of quarternary phosphonium salt(I; R1, R2, R3 and R4 are alkyl, alkenyl or aryl; X=I, Br or Cl) and CO2. Thus, 31.5g propylene oxide and 4.4 g tributylmethyl phosphonium iodide were reacted at 155≦̸C, 4g/cm2G CO2 for 2 hr to give the glycol. The conversion rate of propylene oxide is 100%, and the selectivities of propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol and tripropylene glycol 94, 8, 2, 3,, and 0.1%
