A homogeneous, solid styrene/isobutylene/ beta -pinene random terpolymer, which has a number-average molecular weight of 1500 to 7000 is obtained when from 40 to 60 % of styrene, from 10 to 40 % of isobutylene and from to 10 to 40 % of beta -pinene are polymerised in a hydrocarbon solvent at a temperature of 10 to 50 DEG C and in the presence of a catalyst system containing an alkylaluminium dihalide as primary catalyst and, as cocatalyst, water, an alkyl halide, a hydracid or an alcohol. When combined with resins and waxes, the terpolymer gives a hot-melt resin composition and, with elastomers, a self-bonding adhesive composition.
