[Also in Division C1] CO 2 is extracted from a gas containing it by absorption in a solution of a base having a basicity constant in water of greater than 1 x 10<SP>-6</SP> at 20‹C., and the solution containing a salt of an acid having an apparent dissociation constant in water of greater than 4À31 x 10<SP>-7</SP> at 25‹C., the salt being non-reactive with respect to the base; the solution is then supplied to the anodic compartment of an electro-chemical cell that comprises anodic and cathodic compartments separated by means of a membrane which is at least semi-permeable to cations but not permeable preferentially to anions, and a voltage produced by means of a D.C. external generator being applied between the anode and cathode; CO 2 is liberated in the anodic department (but the salt is not electrolyzed), and the solution is recycled via the cathodic compartment to the CO 2 extraction zone. In Fig.2 carbonated solution from extraction column 2 is passed to anodic compartment 10 of cell 9 where oxygen is liberated on anode 12 which is a gas-electrode of the type used for oxidizing H 2 in fuel cells. After separation of CO 2 and O 2 in 7 the solution is passed to cathodic compartment 11 (separated by membrane 6 from anode 10) where H 2 and OH<SP>-</SP> ions are formed; the regenerated basic solution is recycled to column 2 via 8 where H 2 is extracted and led via duct 19 to compartment 20 on the rear side of anode 12 through which it diffuses and becomes oxidized in contact with electrolyte with consumption of OH<SP>-</SP> ions.
