The microporous separator for batteries is manufactured in the following manner: A master batch is first formed by mixing at room temperature and under low shear, a thermoplastic binder such polyvinyl chloride, with a plastifier such as dioctyl phthalate or adipate. Still under the aforementioned conditions, an inorganic filler, for example silica, a solvent (cyclohexanone) and a non-solvent (water) are added. The mixture is extruded and calendered, and the sheet obtained is passed into a water bath where the solvent is removed from the sheet. The latter is then dried in order to remove the non-solvent and the water of the bath. The separator thus obtained has micropores, is wettable, has an electrical resistance <0.01 OMEGA /cm<2>, an extension >40%, a pore diameter of approximately 1 mu and a tensile strength >10.5 kg/cm<2>. |
