Optical system for detection of flaws in bottles or similar containers, uses a laser beam to scan the entire inside of an empty bottle 22 or similar container, in that two mirrors 14, 15 swivel about axes situated at right angle to each other, which consecutively reflect the laser beam 11. The swivelling of the two mirrors is co-ordinated to impart to the laser beam a circular or helical scanning motion. After having gone through a collecting lens 20, which concentrates the beam at the mouth of the bottle 22 being sampled, the laser beam enters the bottle and scans all of its surfaces point by point. The presence of a flaw in the bottle is detected from the intensity of the laser beam which has gone through or been reflected by the bottle, for example, by means of a hollow sphere 26 reflecting on its inside and a photoelectric detector 27 which is installed in it. <IMAGE>
