The hydraulic double-acting telescopic shock absorber is adjustable pneumatically from within the car so that its effective stiffness can be varied to suit road conditions. The basic resistance to wheel displacements is by a hollow bi-valved (24, 18, 20) piston sliding in a hydraulic cylinder (13). Oil outlets with sprung lift valves (10, 10A) are provided at each end of the cylinder. The valves each have an inlet valve (16, 16A). All four valves communicate with an oil transfer feed (12). The arrangement permits oil to transfer from one side of the piston to the other. Oil is drained by one or other of the outlet valves (10, 10A) during a transfer movement. The resistance of each valve plunger is provided by compressed air filled brass bellows (B). The pressure in the bellows is varied by dash board controls, with compressed air lines (F) between a supply and the bellows.
|
