Shoe base is made of agglomerated materials comprising (A) a fibrous material formed by (a) 50-100 pts. synthetic polymer fibrils or fibrids having a surface area >=1 m2/g, and (b) 0-50 pts. leather scrap or shaving (B) 5-20 wt % w.r.t. (A) of a binder for (A) and opt. (C) 1-10 wt % w.r.t. (A) plasticiser(s). The agglomerates have an apparent density of 0.15-0.40 g/cm3 and a flexibility >15 degrees pref. 15-30 degrees (ASTM D792). The base is lightweight and mechanically strong. The polymer is e.g. polyolefin, polyamide, polystyrene, PVC, etc. The fibrils may contain inorganic fillers inamt. of not >70 wt %. The binder is e.g. natural or synthetic rubber latex.
