A circular knitting machine is of the multi-feed, single bed, rotary cylinder, latch needle type, with a circle of sinker plates (24) which displace t right angles to the needles (22). The displacement both of the needles and of the sinker plates is effected by means of two series of fixed cams (34, 37). The control cams for the needles are mounted conventionally on the outer part (33) of the casing which contains the cylinder housing the sinker plates. The control cams for the sinker plates are disposed inside the machine, in the upper part of the inner wall (40) of this casing. By housing the sinker controls internally beneath the knitting formeD, the stitch-forming zone of the machine can be disengaged completely. The arrangement makes for easier exchange of needles, sinker plates and cams.
