An automatic tool changing device for a machine tool has a horizontal rail fixed to the machine frame. The end section of the rail is hinged and can be rotated through 90 deg. by a power cylinder. When in this position the tool holder can be retracted to grip the tool and then move outwards. The rail section is swung through 90 deg. to align it with the main rail and the tool holder can then move to the opposite end of the rail to replace the tool in the spindle with the tool.
