The handling mechanism transfers a workpiece between successive machining stations and includes a carrier unit (12) which moves in the vertical directions to effect a pick up. The carrier is mounted on a sub-frame (10) and is capable of controlled horizontal and vertical movements relative to the sub-frame. Vertical movements may be effected by a jack (31) controlled by a moving cam acting with a cam-follower, with the jack being activated by contacting a specified zone of the cam. The cam may be displaced relative to the follower when the carrier attains the limits of its horizontal trajectory, and its displacement may be controlled by a stop.
