Silencer for fast flowing exhaust gases - has perforated metal cover held radially off silencing elements to reduce wear

The silencer has sound absorbing elements with gas passages between them arranged within an outer casing. Each element has a core of sound absorbing mineral wool or similar material. The ends of the cores are held in rigid angle frames and the sides exposed to the gases are covered in wire mesh. A perforated metal plate is held away from the wire mesh by distance pieces which leave free passages between them. The gap between the plate and the wire reduces the mechanical wear of the fast flowing gases on the core of the silencing element.
