Heavy rail vehicle drive - uses rotating electrical motors supplied from single converter together with motor regulation circuits for maintaining torque

The drive has the electric motors (MI, MII) coupled via a single converter circuit to a trackside or overhead supply line, or to an onboard diesel generator (G). The converter has 3-phase bridge (I, I', II, II') supplying the base frequencies (fI, fII) for each of the motors. (MI, MII). Theree-phase bridges (III, III') supply additional circuits (ZI, ZII) associated with each of the motors (MI, MII) to modify its voltage or current. The motor (MI, MII) then operates with allowable losses to maintain full magnetic flux and therefore the full motor torque. Pref. the additional circuits (ZI, ZII) are supplied with a compound frequency dependant on that supplied to the different motors (MI, MII). Each may employ triacs or anti-parallel thyristors together with a choke and/or capacitor.
