1381152 Electrode GATES RUBBER CO 17 July 1972 [19 July 1971] 33355/72 Heading H1B [Also in Division C7] A process for making an electrode comprises compacting a mixture of an electrochemically active material and finely divided conducting material upon a conducting support, suspending the electrode in an electrolyte to dissolve a portion of the active material and then electrodepositing the active material as a metal on and within the electrode to produce a metal matrix. The conducting and active materials may be powders compacted with a binder at above 6000 p.s.i. The active material may be nickel, hydroxide, manganese oxide, silver oxide, mercuric oxide or copper oxide. The conducting material may be nickel powder, iron powder or graphite. The support may be a plate, tube, cylinder, woven wire screen, perforated sheet, expanded mesh. The support material may be iron, steel, nickel plated iron, nickel, brass, silver, bronze, platinum, palladium. The electrolyte may be pH 5À5-12 maintained by a buffer, e.g. ammonium hydroxide, or a borate, phosphate, carbonate, tartrate or a sitrate. The electrolyte may also contain a levelling or brightening agent and a complexing agent such as ammonium borate, phosphate, carbonate, chloride, chlorate, perchlorate, cyanide, tartrate, benzoate, citrate, sulphide or sulphite. The electrolyte may be ultrasonically agitated. |
