A manganese complex catalyst for the oxidative coupling of a phenolic monomer comprises a cpd. of formula (I) where R is H, NH2-NH circle with a diagonal line, 1-8C alkyl, aminoalkyl or hydroxyalkyl and n = 2 or 3. Used for oxidatively coupling a phenol of formula (III) in the presence of a solvent, a base and oxygen-contg. gas. X is H, Cl, Br or I, Q is hydrocarbon, halohydrocarbon, hydrocarbonoxy or halohydrocarbonoxy, each with >=2C atoms between halogen and the benzene ring. Q1 can be Q or halogen; Q2 can be Q, halogen or H; X, Q, Q1 and Q2 are all free of tert. carbon. The phenol is e.g. 2,6-xylenol.
