PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound which is useful as an improver of octane number, selectively in high yield, by reacting an isobutylene-containing hydrocarbon with methanol in two reaction towers each having specific reaction conditions, in the presence of a specific catalyst, while circulating a part of the reaction mixtute. CONSTITUTION:Isolbutylene-containing hydrocarbon and methanol are continuously introduced into the first reaction tower R1, which is packed with a strong acid type ion-exchanger resin having the average particle diameter of 0.2-10mm, at a temperature of 60-100 deg.C at a liquid space velocity of 0.1-50(1/hr) under a pressure of 1-50atm in a molar ratio of 1(isobutylene):0.6-1.4. Then, the effluent is divided into two parts at a flow ratio of 3-15:1. The former is recycled to the tower R1, and the letter is intoduced into the second reaction tower R2, which is packed with said resin, at a temperature of 20-55 deg.C while keeping the other conditions same as those of the tower R1. Further, the effluent is introduced into a neutralization tower N, which has a fixed bed packed with water-insoluble solid granular acid-neutralizing agent, and a flushing tower F, successively, and the title compound is obtained from the bottom of the tower F. EFFECT:The acidic substances can be completely removed, and the product can be added to fuel as it is. |
