A method of blocking an essential amino acid such as methionine with maleyl or citraconyl blocking groups includes the steps of: (a) making a saturated solution of the acid in water; (b) buffering the solution at a pH exceeding 8; (c) adding citraconic or maleic anhydride in concentrated form; (d) adding alkali in concentrated form; (e) adding further solid amino acid; and (f) repeating steps (c), (d) and (e) until a desired concentration of blocked amino acid is obtained. The blocked essential amino acid is useful as a feed supplement for ruminants because it is resistant to microbial degradation in the reticulo rumen. |
